Wujiang commemorates Fei Xiaotong’s 110th birthday

On Oct. 11, an academic seminar on Chinas new journey of modernization and commemorating the 110th anniversary of the birth of Fei Xiaotong (1910-2005) was held in Wujiang District. The event aimed to inherit and carry forward the spirit of Fei Xiaotong, who is well-known for his down-to-earth attitude towards workand lifelong devotion to improving peoples livelihood and for advocating the idea of upholding the beauty of each civilization and the diversity of civilizations in the world.

Ding Zhongli, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League (CDL), attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Those attending the ceremony included Wei Liqun, former director of the Research Office of the State Council and dean of the China Academy of Social Management and School of Philosophy and Sociology of Beijing Normal University, Zhang Ping,member of the Standing Committee of the NPC, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the CDL and vice chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Xu Kunlin, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, Hu Gang, vice chairman of CPPCC Jiangsu Committee and chairman of the CDL Jiangsu Provincial Committee, and Chen Zhenyi, director of the Standing Committee of the Suzhou Municipal People’s Congress. Li Ming, secretary of the CPC Wujiang District Committee delivered a speech at the ceremony, which was presided over by Wang Guorong, deputy secretary of the district Party committee and acting district head.

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Fei Xiaotong. As a famous sociologist, anthropologist and social activist at home and abroad, Fei devoted himself to research in sociology, anthropology and ethnology. Having written millions of words, he was instrumental in laying a solid foundation for the development of sociological and anthropological studies in China. In addition, as a former leader of the CDL, he made important contributions to the consolidation and development of multi-party cooperation.

When addressing the ceremony, Ding Zhongli said that many of the propositions put forward by Mr. Fei Xiaotong have practical and far-reaching significance.During his lifetime, Fei cared about people’s livelihood and state affairs. He is a role model who inspires us to adopt a down-to-earth attitude towards work and devote ourselves to serving the country and people.

Li Ming said in his speech that Wujiang District is not only Fei Xiaotong’s hometown but also the place where he startedhis academic career. During his lifetime, Fei returned to Wujiang more than 30 times and visited KaixiangongVillage (named Jiangcun in his works) 26 times. He conducted a lot of field investigations to explore ways for the development of rural China and even the whole of China. His thoughts on improving peoples livelihood, promoting the construction of small towns and enhancing cultural awareness have benefited Wujiang a lot at every stage of its development. Li Ming expressed hope that the seminar could contribute wisdom to promoting the modernization of Wujiang.

At the seminar, experts and scholars reviewed Fei Xiaotong’s life and spoke highly of his contributions to the development of China, especially the development of Southern Jiangsu. They held in-depth discussions onsome issues concerning the new journey of China’s modernization, such as rural revitalization, the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, and China’s regional development.

A documentary literary work on the development of Kaixiangong Village in Wujiang District into a well-off society was launched at the opening ceremony.The book, written by Zhang Jianhua, chairman of the Jiangsu Federation of Literary and Art Circles, is one of the key publications sponsored by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. It has been created to eulogize the great success of China becoming a moderately well-off society by 2020. On the same day, the China Democratic League Central Committee Learning and Practice Base was inaugurated.

During his stay in Wujiang, Ding Zhongli visited the Fei Xiaotong Memorial Hall in Kaixiangong Village and the Song Brocade Cultural Park.

Responsible comrades from relevant central and provincial government departments, Yu Xingnan, member of the standing committee and secretary-general of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, Wang Hongsheng, deputy director of the standing committee of Suzhou Municipal People’s Congress, Jiang Laiqing, vice mayor of Suzhou and chairman of the CDL Suzhou Municipal Committee, andfamily members of Fei Xiaotong participated in the relevant activities.

Shen Rongfa, former leader of the No. 1inspection team of the provincial Party committee and former Party secretary of Wujiang county-level city, and district leaders Xu Xiaofeng, Li Bin, Qian Bin, Yang Bin, Tang Hao, Tang Weiming, Zhang Binggao and Chen Jianzhong attended the opening ceremony.
